Vandava Shiva - 'One Earth, One Humanity'
Vandava Shiva is the activist I mentioned in class. She is a physicist who has turned to ecological issues, and campaigns a lot especially in her home country of India for sane and healthy farming. This has meant defending small farmers from the big farming conglomerates, and from multinationals such as Monsanto which have been trying to oblige farmers to buy genetically modified seeds, and thereby become dependent on them. She also targets Bill Gates and his new-found occupation as 'philanthropist'.
Shiva is part of the 'localism' movement, wanting to return humanity to Schumacher-style smaller producers, in opposition to certain sides to globalisation which favour monopoly and big corporations. The benefits of local production are clear, including ecologically in terms of reduced carbon footprint.
