Class: ECS 921/922 - 'Green Growth' doesn't exist...George Monbiot in The Guardian this month
'It is simply not possible to carry on at the current level of economic activity without destroying the environment'
This is George Monbiot's conclusion in this article on the Guardian site this month.
He believes that 'degrowth' (la décroissance) is needed as a key element in a new mode of living if we are to protect the Earth and live in harmony on it
Prepare an oral presentation of the main ideas of the article for next Tuesday. I will give you a paper version in due course. Focus on:
- why he uses the example of the right whale, the UK moth, coral reefs and rainforests to illustrate the environmental crisis being a single crisis containing many others; the interconnection of crises creating one crisis
- how he demonstrates that trying to sustain current levels of economic activity leads inevitably to further destruction of the planet. And that "there is no such thing as green growth"
