BBC Radio 4: 'Point of View', 7th October 2022 - Howard Jacobson on the fallacy of 'trickle down economics'
In ten minutes, Howard Jacobman gives us an incisive reflection on 'trickledown economics', the theory that if you give more to the very rich in society, the benefits will 'trickle down' to those in the lower income brackets (la théorie du ruissellement). We all know this to be untrue, but the latest attempt by the British Chancellor was a failed attempt to return to favouring the hyper rich at a time of economic squeeze for most of the British population.
'Howard Jacobson ponders greed, wealth and horse-and-sparrow, or 'trickle down', economics. From King Lear and Deuteronomy to bankers' bonuses and universal credit, Howard extols the concept of sufficiency and concludes that trickle down economics simply doesn't work'.
